Here are some instructions on how to display temperature data using the TEMPERATURES link.

Unless you just want to look around, before starting to display temperatures you need to know which logger contains the data you want, and what is the time period of interest. Vanessa and Bob will send this information with their regular messages to the school, and will indentify where they put each logger and what temperature information it contains. We will suppose for this example that you wish to display data from loggers numbers 1 and 2, for a 2 day period from April 18th to April 20th.

Click the heading TEMPERATURES then click the link Display Pacific Crest Trail Expedition temperature data and a blue background will appear with a display box in the middle. The display will default to showing logger #1 and the window will show data from the last two days, if there is any available. There might be a graph visible in the box, or not, but this doesn't matter for the moment.

Under the box there is a line titled "loggers displayed" and after that is a box for each of the 7 available loggers. Each box says either "show" or "hide" the matching logger. Click the box to "show #2". Now you should see the same line of boxes looking like "hide #1 hide #2 show #3 show #4 show #5 show #10 show #11". This means loggers #1 and #2 are showing and the rest of the loggers are hidden.

The next line is titled "Pan:" and is used to move the time window right of left, to later or earlier times. The actual time and date displayed is shown above the graph. The first command "today" will display data for the last day and is a simple place to start setting the display time. Use the Pan commands to set the required display date.

Under the Pan line is a line titled "Zoom:" and a number of boxes with hours and days in them. Click these boxes to change the width of the time display. Clicking the "+2 days" box will make the the display 2 days "wider" in time which will make the graph details shrink. Think about this for a moment! The reason is if you display more days on the screen then the amount of screen occupied by one day will be smaller.

Use the Pan: and Zoom: commands to select the correct time period. Now you should have a display of the loggers #1 and #2, with the dates April 18th, 19th and 20th showing on the top line.

The temperature information you were looking for should now be visible. The color of the graph matches the color of the caption below so you can identify the data. The temperature in degrees Fahrenheit is shown on the left, and the time period is shown above the graph. Remember that if you select a time period for which there is no data, there will be no graph, and the message "no data" will appear.

The next line allows you to "show" or "hide" lines that show the maximum, minimum and average values of the displayed graph. Choose whichever you prefer. It's better to select "hide" when several loggers are displayed, because otherwise the display becomes cluttered with too many lines.

Finally there are three choices. "Print this graph" will download an html version of the graph which you can print directly from Internet Explorer. "PDF-document" will generate a pdf version of the same graph which again can be saved or printed. This is the best way in general to print graphs, but you must have Adobe Reader installed on your computer. "Excel-file" will save the data as an Excel spreadsheet table. This is the most versatile way of using the temperature data, but you must have Microsoft Excel installed and know how to use it.
